To meet ISPM-15 heat treatment standards, wood pallets must be heated until the core temperature reaches at least 56°C (132.8°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes. After treatment, pallets must be stamped with an official IPPC mark, indicating compliance with international phytosanitary regulations.

Does the U.S. require heat-treated pallets?

Yes, the U.S. requires all wood packaging materials, including pallets, to be heat-treated or fumigated before import. This regulation follows ISPM-15 guidelines to prevent the introduction of pests and plant diseases. All compliant pallets must display a certified ISPM-15 stamp.

How long does a heat-treated pallet last?

Heat-treated pallets can last for the entirety of their lifetime, provided they aren’t modified or damaged. Properly heat-treated pallets do not need to be re-treated unless they are repaired using untreated or new wood.

How do you tell if a pallet is heat-treated?

You can tell if a pallet is heat-treated by looking for an IPPC stamp that includes the letters “HT”, which stands for heat treatment. Can mold grow on heat-treated pallets?
